What you need to know
An important part of your written knowledge test and driver know-how is recognition and understanding of road signs. Chapter 5 of the 2024 Alabama Driver Manual covers road signs that you will see as you’re driving and will most likely be tested on for your DMV written test. There will be 30 multiple-choice questions on your written exam, and you must score an 80% to pass, so it’s important to have road signage knowledge down pat. Basic road signs are divided into three categories: regulatory, warning, and informational or guide signs. Road signage will also include pavement markings such as double yellow lines, and crosswalks, and traffic signals, like train crossings and traffic lights. You should be able to answer not only what a road sign is communicating but what action you should take if it calls for it.
